Story allusion
Zhong Kui, styled Zhengnan, was from Zhongnan Mountain in the Tang era. He came first in the examinations, but because his face was fierce and ugly, Emperor Dezong feared him and wanted to cancel the honor. Zhong Kui struck the minister Lu Qi, seized a sword, and killed himself. Lu Zhi later advised honoring him as a great deity who drives away demons. Zhong Kui realized that the divide between ghost and human lies in the heart, then returned to the human realm to subdue evil.
